The Kids Cook Monday: Turkey Dog Chili Mac

Kids Cook Monday

“There's a generation of parents out there who didn't learn to cook at school and now we're rapidly losing the skills that have been passed down through the generations and acted as a kind of safeguard to make sure we can feed ourselves properly.”
- Jamie Oliver

How sobering is that? I have a seven year old at home and the thought that she would need pre-packaged food or a telephone to feed herself as an adult is just plain unacceptable. But, where to start? Enter the new addition to the Healthy Monday campaign:

Kids Cook Monday

The Kids Cook Monday is a weekly opportunity for families to take health into their own hands. It provides examples of kid friendly recipes and video demonstrations along with nutrition and safety tips – making it easy for families to cook and eat together every Monday.

Hoping to achieve the true meaning behind the campaign, we decided to cook a dinner that was fast enough to cook after a long day at work, easy enough that we could have fun doing it, and nutritious enough to be worth cooking in the first place. We hope you like it.

1 medium onion, diced
1 carrot, grated - yep, we snuck a carrot into chili!
2 clove garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp chili powder
2 tsp cumin
1 tsp oregano
¼ cup liquid - water/broth
1 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
1 6 oz can of tomato paste
2 16 oz cans spiced chili beans
1 pkg turkey hot dogs, cut in bite size pieces
1 16 oz pkg noodles

Saute the onion and carrot in the oil until semi-tender, about 3 - 4 minutes. Add garlic and spices, cook an additional 3 – 4 minutes until veggies are tender and spices are starting to stick to the bottom. Add the liquid to deglaze the pan.

Once the liquid is absorbed into the veggies, add the beans, crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Heat through and add the hot dogs. Let simmer while the noodles are cooking.

Prepare noodles according to package directions. To serve, pour the chili over the noodles. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.....chow down!

Tim & Ash had dinner covered. So what did I get to do?

Kids Cook Monday

Yeah, that figures..........

Tips & Comments
If the chili is a little spicy for the younger kids try swirling some ketchup on the top and mixing it in. The sweetness of the ketchup mixes with the spiciness of the chili and it tastes wonderful.

A garnish of light sour cream and chopped green onions would taste great.

I am all for this initiative! My kids did not want to cook but now they do make the effort, as they grown tired of fast foods and don't want to live with the weight problems and health issues of these foods.

This is such a great idea. I am aware of all the effort Jamie Oliver had made in order to teach people how to eat healthy. It is great what you do. Children should learn from early age the value of homemade food.

It is so true! Children (and even teenagers) have no duties any more! What a great reminder that we need to teach them to cook and to love it!

Hi Julie! I love this and thanks for sharing it on the two for tuesday recipe blog hop! My husband is one of 7 kids and every night of the week a different kid cooked! we adopted that when the kids got older and so two nights a week they make something yummy! I was amazed though when leading both of my scout troops in the cooking badge how FEW kids had any cooking experience! Alex@amoderatelife

I have a young cousin who's cooking skills include opening cans and popping packages in the microwave. If I were to put a simple potato in front of her, she wouldn't know which way to turn. And it makes me wonder, how is that even possible, but I know it's true for so many kids these days. Cooking is a life skill. Thanks for linking up with Two for Tuesday.

This is a great post, and you are so right. It is very important that we teach our children how to cook. My boys take turns because it gets too much trouble in our little kitchen, but they love helping out.

Yesterday my 7-year-old helped me make squash pancakes and my toddler helped me make homemade tomato sauce.

We have a very small garden, but I still try to grow a lot of different things, and I love that my boys get to see things from the garden at our dinner table even though we live in the big city.

Thank you for participating in the The Wednesday Window . I hope you will join me again next Wednesday.
If you have any giveaways, I invite you to link up tonight at The Fantastic Friday Giveaway Linky , which opens up on 10 p.m. EST Thursday night.
